A story of forgetting and remembering

Pamyatayesh is a narrative recital currently in development. Through staging, film, and Ukrainian art song, it seeks to explore what it means to remember and pass on a cultural identity that has been torn from its physical place.

Pretty wild that this project is going up for the first time in just three days! I wonder what my baba would have thought if she could see a speech she gave at a family reunion becoming the basis for a music/theatre/film piece.

My opera practice over the past year has focused on layering a wide range of mediums, from film to art song to dance. Opera has the potential to be so multidisciplinary, and I think that makes it an incomparable vehicle for storytelling.

While creating Pamyatayesh, I got to connect with actors, visual artists, film artists, and writers who each left a mark on the piece. Through this combination of mediums and perspectives, I feel I am able to do justice to this multi-generational story.

If we collect the photos, wear the clothes, and sing the songs, can we reimagine the memories?

Pamyatayesh will have its very first audience this November. Details to come.

"These are such fragile memories." My baba wrote those words in 1999 when she was reflecting on her life and her memories of her own grandparents. She looked back on her youth, remembering certain relatives vividly and others as only brief shadows.

Those words ring truer to me as I reflect on the experience of seeing three of my grandparents live with dementia and as I begin to outlive some of the most important people in my own life.

In creating Pamyatayesh, I got to consider who my baba was before I knew her and step back into her fragile memories.

"First Steps" considered how we can use art to connect with an ancestral past that is rooted in a far away place.

When I was little, that connection manifested through Ukrainian dance. Now, it's through singing.

What is Pamyatayesh?

Pamyatayesh is equal parts music, theatre, and film. It's a narrative project that chronicles the efforts of Jane, a third-generation Ukrainian-Canadian woman, to pass on her culture to her granddaughter. This piece has been in the works for nearly three years now. The initial writing process involved lots of archival exploration—uncovering the family stories I'd never heard, and remembering (how fitting!) a few that I'd forgotten.

Thank you @oliviaetey for all your dramaturgy support, helping me translate piles of songs and photos into a narrative as delicately persistent as the memories themselves.

All my most vivid memories of my baba involve food. She was an excellent cook, and even in her early stages of dementia, it was something we loved to share.
